8. Tidewall

[Editor's note: Eighth night. The conversation's become two-way. He remembers what you told him yesterday.]

So it was good talking to you yesterday. I really liked that story you had about your mother. Sorry to hear what happened to her, though. Glad she's doing better.

Have you ever been to the Tidewall?

It's this crazy thing when you actually get in there. I mean, the Tidewall Authority won't let just anybody in there unless you're there for a very specific reason. But a lot of people have been there at least once for different things, you know?

Anyway, Tidewall is the reason why Nuevo Bay is able to exist. And to be honest, sometimes I wonder why some fucking dude, gang or something, won't just drive a fucking gasoline truck straight into the front door and blow a section off. Bury Atlas Heights in the fucking flooded waters. Make all the rich people enjoy a little bit of the wet clothes that we have to deal with all the time, you know?

That's just a fantasy, though.

But yeah, Tidewall Authority. Big military arm of Nuevo Bay. Basically the security to make sure that the people are separated from the corporations. I mean, yes, every corporation has their own security and whatever, but they keep the city, well, according to them, they keep the city safe. The main thing is the Tidewall keeps it safe from the natural disasters and floods and shit. And then they have their paramilitary arm.

And that is where things get real funky.

Usually you'll see them around: the guards, you know? When they're in little police posts or whatever. Not at every corner or anything. Just in the areas that make a good amount of money. You know, the areas that can pay for them to be there.

And then, of course, on top of that, you have the real crazy guys: the Sweeper agents. They come around whenever there's too much network anomalies. If you're fucking with the city, they're gonna fuck with you. That's the story. That's the answer, cut and dry.

So yeah, if you ever actually meet a Tidewall agent? Actually see if you can get them not to be that fucking stone-cold robot, practice-answered bullshit, you know? See if you can actually find out if there's a real person in there, or if they're actually, you know, just cogs in the machine. 'Cause you ask one guy, he'll say, "Yeah, there's a real person in there. Yes, they actually have feelings." But if you ask me? They must be high on fucking emotional suppressants or some shit. 'Cause I've never seen one of those motherfuckers laugh.

So yeah.

Anyway, how's your father been holding up ever since that situation with your mom? You doing okay? I mean, it's not as necessary or important. Of course he's not the one that actually had to deal with that shit. But, you know, love is real, right? And they actually care for each other. You know, his feelings should matter too.
